Trails to good health
Trail signs and kits make exercise easy and fun!

Trail signs measure 8" square.

Walking is a valuable and easy form of exercise and having a marked trail makes it fun! Trail sign kits are available to groups or organizations, or trails may be marked for you. Contact Beth at the Columbus County Health Dept. at 640-6615, or Healthy Carolinians at 642-1734.

The Drop A Ton Truck is in!
Grand prize in successful participant drawing.

Hamp Avant and his Quality Ford team have fun with a fun truck.

More than 2,100 people signed up for Columbus County Drops a Ton and at the end of 2005, those who feel they were successful in meeting at least one of their goals will enter to win ton-related prizes, including the grand prize, a "one-ton" pickup truck. Organizers considered a truck with a one-ton capacity, but found that a smaller truck would be more popular.

Dept. of Aging raises fund for exercise program.

Ed Worley promotes a healthy event.

Seniors around the county benefited from the Columbus County Dept. of Aging Great One-Ton Gear Sale held at the Fire Ant Festival in Whiteville May 14. Residents donated items to the center in the weeks prior to the event and the centers made 100% of the proceeds.

Good health with class
Cooperative Extension Service offers health classes

Measuring the height of a student.

About 60 people took advantage of a specialized class offered by the Columbus County Cooperative Extension Service earlier this year to learn better ways to live healthful lives. Each student was screened at the beginning and end of the six-week class so they could see their progress in weight loss and other health factors.

The balloons are in!
Get yours at a major festival near you.

The new "Release Me" balloons.

Balloons will be offered at festivals throughout the county this year for a $1 donation. When you buy a balloon you can write the names of habits you would like to lose, such as smoking, or weight, in pounds. At any time, you and your friends, or you alone, can use the balloon in a ceremony that will symbolize the end of your burden as you release the helium-filled balloon into the air.

A verse is printed on each balloon:

TODAY (IS MY DAY)
Today is the day of all of my dreams,
The day I will always remember.
For today is the day,
That I can make today,
The first day of the best of my life.
